If you are a school counselor, you may have noticed an interesting trend. While students remain as intelligent and calm as ever, their parents have started to become increasingly reactionary. You may, at first, find that this does not greatly affect you. You deal with the students, after all, and not their parents. It is the parents, however, who may sue you if something happens to their child, and it is important to have a good counselor school insurance policy to ensure that neither you, nor the school, lose money when parents start pointing the finger.

In most cases, the school you work for will provide you with an insurance policy. You should never make this assumption, however, and it is a good idea to ask during the initial job interview what kind of coverage will be provided. In many places, it is the school's responsibility to provide all staff members with the necessary insurance. If they have not provided you with coverage, you should check to see if this is the case. At some schools, you will be asked to find a policy for yourself and can later submit a reimbursement form.

If your employer reimburses your coverage, or does not provide you with coverage at all, you will have to find your own counselor school insurance. Some counselors actually prefer to find their own, because it gives them the chance to shop around and find the best policy. Most of the time, a school will choose its policies based more on cost than on coverage, and you may be able to find a more comprehensive policy by yourself. If the school reimburses you, however, it may put limitations on the amount of money you can spend. That being said, if you are willing to put the time into comparison shopping, you should be able to find an excellent policy for a relatively low cost.

Comparison shopping is the key to finding the best policy. First, you should research which companies provide the best coverage for counselors. In particular, you should look at liability and malpractice insurance. Once you have a list of potential agencies, you can call them, or stop by their office. Ask for the details of specific plans and keep careful track of all the information, so that you can carefully compare all of your options. Once you have made your comparisons, you can purchase the plan best suited to you.

Whether the school you work for will reimburse you or not, there is no doubt you will be glad you put the effort into finding the best counselor school insurance plan available. Knowing that you are protected can give you the confidence to talk to your students openly and may better enable you to help them with their problems.
